つながりを創る：筑北ラボのエンガワ体験
長野県筑北村の「筑北ラボ」の現場が再開して数ヶ月が経ちます。長野市内はすっかり春の気配が濃くなってきましたが、今年はまだまだなごり雪の多い3月です。筑北も3月になってから、辺りが何度か白い雪化粧に変わっています。
現場は、新たな息吹と魅力を持つ場へと変えるための改修が進んでいます。
今は外回りを重点的に施行中です。
写真は、古民家の南側二間幅と二・五間幅の窓周りを室内「広縁」から室外「エンガワ」へと変わった姿です。「広縁」は廊下のような役割を持ったもので、大概の民家では南側に設けられ室と室をつなぐ、また外と中をつなぐ役割の空間です。この民家では木製ガラス建具で仕切られてますが、雨戸などで閉じたり開いたりという日本ならではのあいまいな「中間領域-境界」の場です。
この改修では、そこをあえて外部空間の「エンガワ」に変え外部とのつながりを持った場に変えました。腰掛けて近所の方々と談話したり、夏には日陰のすずむ場所であったり、果物や野菜などを干したり、寝っころがったりと、様々な活動が楽しめる場として多用途空間に生まれ変わります。
改修前の木製ガラス建具は、そのまま新しい境界部分に再利用しています。古いガラス越しに新しい耐震補強用の筋交がラップする姿は、とても不思議な感じがしますが上手く馴染んでいるようにも見えます。
このエンガワの床というかデッキ部分は、長野県産のぶ厚いカラマツ材を敷いています。この先、このエンガワは木材保護塗料を塗って仕上げる予定です。どのような色にするか、今からとても楽しみです。
この筑北ラボの古民家は、農村・山間部の典型的な間取りと外観を持った建物です。十一間にも及ぶ一直線の軒のラインやシンプルな屋根の魅力的なプロポーションは、日本の伝統建築の美しさを象徴しています。そして本体の大屋根と下屋の二段構えのプロポーションが非常にそそられます。
日本の古民家は「屋根」の建物と言ってもいいかもしれません。屋根と壁もしくは窓面が絶妙なバランスの上に成り立ち、そして過剰な装飾を嫌い「質素」に表れている。まさにミースの"less is more"の日本版。
このプロジェクトは、新築では得られない古民家ならではの味わい深さを追求しながら進められています。

Crafting Connections: The Engawa Experience in Chikuhoku Lab.
The "Chikuhoku Lab" construction site in Chikuhoku Village, Nagano Prefecture, has been running again for several months. While the city of Nagano is showing the beginnings of spring, this year's March is still filled with remnants of snow. Chikuhoku, too, has seen its surroundings covered in white snow several times since the beginning of March.
The site is progressing with a focus on exterior renovations to transform it into a space with renewed vitality and charm.
Currently, the focus is on the exterior renovations.
This photo shows the transformation of the windows on the south side of the traditional Japanese house with the widths of 'niken' and 'nikenhan' from the interior 'hiroen' to the exterior 'engawa'. The 'Hiroen' plays a similar role to a hallway, which is typically located on the south side of a house to connect rooms and serve as a space bridging indoors and outdoors. In this house, it is divided by wood-glass fixtures, representing the ambiguous 'middle zone boundary' unique to Japan, where sliding doors can be opened or closed with features such as storm shutters.
In this renovation, we deliberately transformed it into an outdoor space called 'Engawa' to create a connection with nature. It will become a versatile space where you can sit and chat with neighbours, enjoy the cool shade in summer, dry fruit and vegetables, lie down and engage in various activities.
The existing wooden frame fixtures have been reused in the new boundary area. The sight of new seismic reinforcement bars wrapped around old glass fixtures may seem strange, but they fit in well.
The floor, or deck, of this Engawa is covered with thick larch wood from Nagano Prefecture. In the future, we plan to finish this Engawa with a wood preservative. We are looking forward to choosing the colour.
The traditional Japanese house at Chikuhoku Lab embodies the layout and appearance typical of rural and mountainous areas. Its straight 'jyuichiken' eaves and simple yet charming roof proportions symbolise the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture. The double-layered structure of the main roof and the lower roof adds to its appeal.
Japanese old houses can be thought of as 'roof buildings'. They stand on a delicate balance between the roof, walls, or window surfaces and exhibit simplicity by avoiding excessive decoration, resembling the Japanese version of Mies van der Rohe's 'less is more' philosophy.
This project is being pursued in search of the deep fascination of old Japanese houses that cannot be achieved with new construction.
