内と外、その間にある縁側がつくる調和
今宵は、縁側に出て月を眺めながら...
縁側は、日本建築の粋を極める特別な場所です。外縁形式の縁側は、屋根や軒がかかったものや「ぬれ縁」のように雨さらしのものなど、建物の外に付随するものが一般的です。回廊形式ではお寺などよく見かけますね。
建物の外側「縁」に佇み、四季折々の美しい自然を愛でることができる贅沢なスペースです。春には桜の花が舞い、夏には緑が濃く茂り、秋には紅葉が彩り、冬には雪景色が美しい月見の風景を縁側から楽しむことができます。まるで桂離宮の「月見台」のように、満ち欠けする月を眺める静寂なひとときが、縁側で過ごす贅沢なひとときになります。
一方、内縁形式の縁側は、季節や天候に左右されない屋内の空間でありながら、外の景色を感じることができる不思議な場所です。日本独自のものというよりは、明治以降の大きな屋敷にみられ、どちらかというと西洋の空間的な要素の影響があるこの曖昧な境界線に位置する縁側は、外と内、自然と人間の間の調和を象徴しています。内縁形式は屋内であることから、建物は必然的に大きくなり、建設コストや床面積が限られる現代の家屋ではなかなか見かけることが少なくなりました。
その形を変えながらその豊かな場である「縁側」を、私は住まいの設計の中に取り入れようと試みています。住まい手のその場の使い方を想像しながら...
縁側から眺める風景は、日本美意識を味わうことができる特別な体験です。日本の伝統と現代の融合、曖昧な境界線の美しさを感じながら、縁側の静寂な空間は、そこに居る人に日常の喧騒から離れ、心の平穏を取り戻させてくれるでしょう。縁側の魅力に触れることで、月見の情緒に浸り、日本の美の奥深さを垣間見ることができます。
私が常に設計で試みている「調和」とは、この縁側が提供する日本の文化と自然との調和を感じさせてくれるものなのかもしれない。

The Harmony Between Inside and Outside: The Engawa
Tonight, when I go out on the engawa and look at the moon...
The engawa epitomises the essence of Japanese architecture, serving as a special space adjacent to the exterior of buildings. Outer engawa typically have roofed or rain-protected sections, often found in traditional corridor-style layouts such as those found in Japanese temples.
Standing on the edge of the building, the outer engawa offers a luxurious spot to admire the changing seasons. From the fluttering cherry blossoms of spring to the lush greenery of summer, the vibrant hues of autumn foliage, and the serene snowscapes of winter, one can enjoy the enchanting lunar views similar to those from the moon viewing platform of Katsura Imperial Villa.
On the other hand, the inner engawa, found in larger estates since the Meiji era, reflects more Western influences in its spatial design. Although the inner engawa is an interior space that is unaffected by seasonal changes, it retains a mysterious ambience that allows residents to experience the harmony between indoors and outdoors, nature and human presence. With the trend towards smaller modern homes, the presence of inner engawa has become less common due to constraints on construction costs and floor space.
Always striving to incorporate the rich essence of "engawa" into my architectural designs, I imagine how residents will use this space...
The views from the engawa offer a unique opportunity to appreciate the aesthetics of Japanese culture. Amidst the fusion of tradition and modernity and the allure of its ambiguous boundaries, the tranquil ambience of the engawa provides a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, allowing individuals to regain a sense of inner peace. By immersing oneself in the charm of the engawa, one can experience the nostalgic feeling of looking at the moon and glimpse the profound beauty of Japan.
Perhaps the 'harmony' I always try to achieve in my designs is the sense of harmony with Japanese culture and nature that this engawa provides. By GIGI
