日本の美の源: 線と素材の調和
私が思う日本の美意識とは、シンプルなまでの線とその構成の美しさである。また視覚的にも感触的にもその素材感を素直に表現し、そこにその素材の新たな価値観を生み出すことだと思います。
日本建築の外部や内部空間に使われてきた様々な線は、複雑なものではなくあくまでもシンプルで明快なものでした。そしてその線が創りだす構成の美しさは、静かであるがダイナミックでもあると思います。そしてさらにその空間に奥行きを持たせている。
これに合わせて、素材感はとても重要な意味を付加させているでしょう。特に視覚的な部分と感触的なところに。
線の構成美と素材感、この二つの要素による調和と衝突、視覚的なものと触覚的なものとのコントラストにより、日本の空間や美意識は、繊細なものとして表現されると私は考えます。
また私自身が日本人であるということは、日本の美意識を考える上で根底をなすものではないかと。
考えること、見ること、触れること、感じること・・・。これら全てが、日本人という潜在的なファクターを通していることであり、自分の中での日本の美意識に大きな影響を与えている。
これは随分昔に参加した国際家具デザインコンペでのお題のひとつでした。この考えをもとに家具「アームチェア」をデザインするというものでした。私が提出したデザインのタイトルは「WA」でした。

Message for the Japanese aesthetic.
I think the quality of the Japanese aesthetic is the simple lines and the beauty of that composition. In addition, it expresses the visual and tactile texture of the material directly and creates a new sense of value for that material.
The various lines used for the exterior and interior spaces of traditional Japanese architecture are not complicated, but strictly simple and clear. The beauty of the composition of the lines is calm and dynamic, giving more depth to the space.
In addition, the texture of the material has its effect, especially from a visual and tactile point of view.
The harmony and conflict between the aesthetic composition of the lines and the texture of the material, and the contrast between the visual and the tactile, is what makes Japanese architecture and Japanese aesthetics so sensitive and delicate.
The fact that I am Japanese is fundamental to the idea when I think of Japanese aesthetics.
Thinking, looking, touching, feeling.... These activities are done by the spontaneous factor of being Japanese. This has a great influence on my idea of Japanese aesthetics.
This was one of the subjects of an international furniture design competition I took part in a long time ago. The idea was to design a furniture 'armchair' based on this idea. The title of the design I submitted was 'WA'.
